The Copa Larimar trophy: international craftsmanship with dominican identity

The Copa Larimar trophy was not conceived as a simple prize. From its very design, it was envisioned as a piece with its own meaning, capable of representing both sporting excellence and the identity of the Dominican Republic.

Crafted by the prestigious British workshop Thomas Lyte, holder of a Royal Warrant from Queen Elizabeth II of England, the trophy brings together international silversmithing tradition with a deeply local element: the larimar stone.

Thomas Lyte has worked on the production of official trophies and medals for FIFA, as well as on emblematic pieces in international sport such as the FA Cup, the Ryder Cup, and the Six Nations Championship.

The piece also features the contribution of Dominican designer Mónica Varela, who was responsible for integrating the larimar stone as the central element of the trophy. This addition not only gives the tournament its name, but symbolically anchors the cup to the Dominican Republic and to Cap Cana as its host destination.

“The trophy was conceived with a very clear vision: it had to be an imposing piece, with symbolic value and a sense of permanence. Incorporating larimar allowed us to anchor the tournament to our identity from its very first edition,” said Ydalia Yunén, President of the Copa Larimar Committee.

A design with a sense of permanence

The creative process began with a clear premise: to create a piece that would transcend its function as a prize and become a symbol. Rather than a trophy for a single edition, the goal was to develop an object capable of accompanying the tournament’s growth over time within Cap Cana’s sports calendar.

The incorporation of larimar transformed the cup into a unique piece within the national sporting landscape. By integrating an emblematic Dominican stone, the trophy gains symbolic value that connects the competition to its cultural context and to the territory where it is held.

Every detail reflects that intention: to fuse world class craftsmanship with Dominican identity in a piece designed to endure.

A symbol that will travel across clubs

For the champion teams, lifting the cup represents more than a sporting victory. The aspiration is for the trophy to travel across winning clubs over the years, building a shared history within Dominican padel.

The Copa Larimar currently brings together eight clubs from across the Dominican Republic in a team format that combines men’s and women’s pairs. In this context, the trophy stands as the culmination of a collective effort that goes beyond any single player or match.

A piece that shapes the tournament’s narrative

The choice of an internationally renowned silversmithing workshop and the integration of a Dominican symbol respond to the same intention: to give the tournament a clear identity from its earliest editions.

The trophy does more than reward each year’s winners. It helps define the narrative of the tournament and reinforces Cap Cana’s positioning as a leading sports destination in the Dominican Republic.

The second edition of the Copa Larimar begins on February 26. The final will take place on February 28 in Cap Cana Sports City.
