Inside the Cap Cana Foundation’s Apiary and Plant Nursery

Most people know Cap Cana for its beaches, golf courses and outdoor lifestyle. Fewer know that, tucked away within the Destination City, another side of Cap Cana is working every day to protect local biodiversity.

At the Cap Cana Foundation, conservation comes to life through guided visits that take families behind the scenes of two of its most important environmental projects: the nursery and the apiary. Along the way, visitors discover native plants, learn about the fascinating world of bees and experience firsthand how sustainability becomes part of everyday life.

It’s an experience that combines education, nature and plenty of hands-on moments for both children and adults.

The adventure begins

The visit starts at the Foundation’s offices, where everyone is fitted with protective gear before heading outdoors. Adults receive full beekeeping equipment, while children have their own specially sized suits, making them feel like real beekeepers before the tour even begins.

It’s also where visitors might meet one of the Foundation’s most beloved residents: Cuerváceo, a rescued crow that has become part of the Foundation’s family. Curious and full of personality, he often steals the spotlight before the experience has even started.

A walk through the nursery

From there, the group heads to the nursery, where the Foundation cultivates native and endemic plant species that support Cap Cana’s conservation efforts.

Visitors learn how these plants contribute to local ecosystems and why protecting biodiversity begins long before trees and flowers become part of the landscape. It’s an opportunity to better understand the work happening behind the scenes to preserve the natural environment that surrounds the Destination City.

Stepping inside the apiary

The apiary is where the experience becomes even more immersive.

Standing just a few feet from active beehives, visitors learn how a colony functions, how bees communicate and how honey is carefully harvested. The Foundation’s team explains every step of the process while sharing the essential role bees play in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

Children can interact with many of the beekeeping tools used throughout the process, making the visit both educational and engaging. Seeing the honey extraction equipment up close helps bring the entire process to life in a way that’s difficult to appreciate from books or videos alone.

One of the highlights comes at the end of the tour, when visitors have the opportunity to taste the Foundation’s artisanal honey: La Colmena Agradecida. Produced on-site using traditional methods, a portion of the harvest is available for purchase, with proceeds helping support the Foundation’s environmental conservation and education programs.
