Long before they lifted the FIFA World Cup trophy, players like Lamine Yamal, Rodri, Pedri and Gavi had something in common: they all competed in MICFootball. Today, Cap Cana is home to the Caribbean edition of the same tournament, becoming part of a legacy that has helped shape generations of world-class footballers.
The connection became even more remarkable after Spain claimed the 2026 FIFA World Cup title. Eighteen of the 26 players selected for the championship-winning squad had previously played in MICFootball, reinforcing the tournament’s reputation as one of the world’s premier stages for youth football.
A tournament that builds futures
For more than two decades, MICFootball has brought together some of the world’s most promising young players before they reach the professional stage. The tournament has earned international recognition for its ability to showcase future stars, many of whom have gone on to become some of football’s biggest names.
That legacy is now part of Cap Cana’s story.
For the second consecutive year, the Destination City welcomed the Caribbean edition of MICFootball at The Fields, Cap Cana Sports City, where hundreds of young athletes from around the world competed while taking the next steps in their football journey.
Before they became World Champions
Spain’s 2026 World Cup squad offers perhaps the strongest example of MICFootball’s impact.
Among the tournament’s former participants are goalkeeper Unai Simón, defenders Pau Cubarsí, Marc Cucurella, Alejandro Grimaldo, Marc Pubill and Eric García, midfielders Rodri, Pedri, Gavi and Álex Baena, and forwards Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, Nico Williams, Ferran Torres, Borja Iglesias, Víctor Muñoz and Yeremy Pino.
Several of them received individual recognition during Spain’s World Cup triumph. Rodri was named the 2026 FIFA World Cup MVP and won the tournament’s Golden Ball, while Pau Cubarsí was awarded the Best Young Player award after playing a key role in Spain’s title-winning campaign.
Cubarsí’s rise offers one of the clearest examples of how quickly that journey can unfold. In 2023, he helped FC Barcelona win the MICFootball U19 title. Just three years later, he became a world champion with Spain.
Each followed a different path to the top. Yet all shared the experience of competing in MICFootball during their formative years.
Lamine Yamal played the tournament in the Under-12 and Under-16 categories while representing FC Barcelona’s academy. Rodri competed with Villarreal CF, Pedri represented Real Juventud Laguna, and Gavi stood out as one of the tournament’s brightest young talents long before becoming a key figure for both FC Barcelona and Spain.
Their stories reflect what MICFootball has represented for generations of players: an opportunity to compete at the highest youth level before reaching football’s biggest stages.
A legacy shared by football’s biggest names
Spain’s latest generation is far from the only one to emerge from MICFootball.
Over the years, the tournament has welcomed players who would later become global icons, including Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr., Dani Carvajal, Marcelo, Juan Mata, Philippe Coutinho, Mohamed Salah, Casemiro and Cole Palmer.
Many arrived as promising teenagers. Years later, they became Champions League winners, Ballon d’Or contenders and World Cup champions.
That long list of alumni has helped establish MICFootball as one of the world’s most respected youth football tournaments.
Cap Cana’s place in the story
For its second edition in Cap Cana, MICFootball once again brought together some of the world’s most promising young players at The Fields. Beyond the competition, the tournament created opportunities for talent, ambition and international connections to grow.
While no one knows which names will shape the future of football, history suggests that some of the players who competed in Cap Cana could one day follow the same path as many of MICFootball’s most celebrated alumni.
