Driving to Destination City

Plan your trip from Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata, Samaná or Santiago with information on routes, tolls and stops along the way.

The country’s main highways connect with the eastern corridor and Autopista del Coral, which leads toward Punta Cana and Cap Cana. Choose your starting point and plan your drive to your accommodation.

From Santo Domingo

Estimated driving time: 2½–3½ hours.

Take Autopista Las Américas east and continue along Autovía del Este, following signs for San Pedro de Macorís and La Romana. Use the bypasses to avoid city centers, then join Autopista del Coral toward Punta Cana. On the final stretch, follow signs for Cap Cana.

Tolls

This route includes the Las Américas, La Romana, Coral 1 and Coral 2 toll plazas. The published rate for Category 1 light vehicles is RD$100 per plaza, for a total of RD$400 one way.

Fuel and Stops

These stops are along the main route to Cap Cana, without the need to exit at overpasses or enter town centers. Stop to refuel, enjoy a meal or pick up supplies before continuing your journey.

Las Américas Stop

Located on Autopista Las Américas, this stop offers the chance to pick up supplies at Hola Market or enjoy a meal at Asadero Doña Pula before continuing east.

TotalEnergies Autovía del Este — Juan Dolio

Refuel and take a break at its Bonjour convenience store, with coffee, drinks, snacks and travel essentials before continuing toward Cap Cana.

NEXT Cumayasa II

In Cumayasa, refuel your vehicle and stop at Starbucks or Shish Kabab. It is an option for coffee, breakfast or lunch along the way.

NEXT Coral

Farther along Autopista del Coral, this station features Shish Kabab and an In & Out convenience store, where you can buy drinks and snacks for the road.

Axxon La Romana

On Autovía del Coral, this station offers fuel, meals at La 5ta Mendoza, and refreshments at La Panería and its convenience store. Facilities also include restrooms, a Banco Popular ATM, and Paso Rápido tag purchases and balance top-ups before continuing to Cap Cana.

From Puerto Plata

Estimated driving time: 5½–7 hours.

Take the Puerto Plata–Navarrete road through Imbert and Altamira, then join Autopista Duarte toward Santo Domingo. Depending on your starting point, use Santiago’s northern bypass, Circunvalación Norte, to continue south without crossing the city center.

Before entering the capital, take Circunvalación Juan Bosch and follow the connection toward Autopista Juan Pablo II and Las Américas. Continue along the eastern corridor toward La Romana, then join Autopista del Coral and follow the connection to Cap Cana.

Tolls

The number of toll plazas depends on the access roads and bypasses you use. Allow for tolls on the connection around Santo Domingo, as well as La Romana, Coral 1 and Coral 2 on the eastern stretch.

Fuel and Stops

Start with enough fuel and plan your first break around Navarrete or Santiago. Once you join the eastern corridor, you can use the stops listed above to refuel and eat before the final stretch.

From Samaná

Estimated driving time from Santa Bárbara de Samaná: 4½–5½ hours.

Head toward Sánchez and connect with Autopista del Nordeste, also known as Juan Pablo II, toward Santo Domingo. At the Las Américas junction, continue east toward San Pedro de Macorís and La Romana.

Join Autopista del Coral toward Punta Cana and follow signs for Cap Cana. If you are departing from Las Terrenas or Las Galeras, adjust the route and driving time to your exact starting point.

Tolls

Autopista del Nordeste includes the Guaraguao, Naranjal and Marbella toll plazas. If you leave from Las Terrenas via Bulevar Turístico del Atlántico, allow for El Catey as well. Additional tolls apply along the eastern corridor.

Fuel and Stops

Refuel before entering Autopista del Nordeste. One option is Shell Samaná in Arroyo Barril, on the Nagua–Samaná road, which lists 24-hour fuel service and a convenience store.

For the rest of the journey, refer to the eastern corridor stops listed in the From Santo Domingo section.

From Santiago

Estimated driving time: 4½–5½ hours.

Take Autopista Duarte toward Santo Domingo. Before entering the capital, use Circunvalación Juan Bosch to connect with Autopista Juan Pablo II and continue toward Las Américas.

Follow the eastern corridor toward San Pedro de Macorís and La Romana. Then join Autopista del Coral toward Punta Cana and take the signposted connection to Cap Cana.

Tolls

Allow for tolls on the sections of Circunvalación Juan Bosch you use, as well as those along the eastern route. The total depends on the connection you take to Las Américas.

Fuel and Stops

Plan your first break along Autopista Duarte. Shell’s directory lists a station in La Penda, La Vega; check access from your direction of travel.

Farther along, you will find the fuel and dining options detailed in the From Santo Domingo section.

Before You Leave

Prepare for Tolls

Carry cash in Dominican pesos. If your vehicle has a Paso Rápido tag, check that it is active and has enough credit.

Plan your stops

Ask your hotel or host for the exact location and access instructions. Driving time within Cap Cana varies depending on your accommodation.
